Frequently asked questions

Are the prices exact?

No. They are approximate public figures for historical sales, gathered from published reports such as auction-house results pages and press coverage. Most auction prices include the buyer's premium; the app says so on each reveal. Private-sale prices are as reported and may be unconfirmed. Prices in other currencies are converted to US dollars at the exchange rate of the sale date, and the inflation-adjusted figure in the info sheet is an estimate.

Where do the images come from?

All works in the app are in the public domain. Images are reproductions released by museums under open-access programmes (The Met, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Rijksmuseum) or hosted on Wikimedia Commons as faithful reproductions of public-domain works. The info sheet on each reveal shows the source and the credit line.

The picture is a print or a photograph. Did this exact sheet sell?

For prints, posters and photographs, the price usually belongs to another impression of the same edition, and the app labels it that way. For paintings and drawings, the price belongs to the object in the picture.

Is this gambling?

No. "Bid" is a guessing game. There is no money, no betting and no prize. Scores are points, and they stay on your phone.

What data does the app collect?

None. The app has no accounts, no analytics and no network features. Your scores, streak and taste profile stay on your iPhone. See the privacy policy.

How do I reset my progress?

Deleting the app removes all of its data. To redo the taste questionnaire without deleting anything, open Profile and choose Redo questionnaire.

I found a wrong price, date or credit.

Please write to us with the title of the work and what you believe is wrong, with a link to a source if you have one. Corrections ship in the next update.

Where can I get the app?

GTP of Art is in final testing for the App Store. It is an iPhone app for iOS 18 and later, free, with no ads or in-app purchases. The App Store link will appear here on release.
